Program and Role Summary: Wayfinder’s Davidson Program for Independence at the Los Angeles campus is a comprehensive residential rehabilitation program for adults ages 18 and older who are blind or visually impaired, many with recent vision loss. Participants learn assistive technology, orientation and mobility, braille, and independent living skills. Each client pursues individualized goals that lead to a confident transition to an independent life and education or employment. The primary focus of the Residential Counselor, Adult Services is to provide guidance, assistance and services to students. Maintains rules of the Wayfinder Family Services and Davidson Program for Independence (DPI) guidelines as applied to the residence. Oversees, assists and instructs in the housekeeping of the dormitory and supervises students in the residence. This is a part-time position budgeted for 16 hours/week. The schedule for the role is Fridays and Saturdays from 11:00pm - 7:30am. Primary Responsibilities: Orient students to the dormitory and other areas of the Wayfinder Family Services available to them evenings. Make certain all new students are on time for dinner and breakfast. Assist as required in serving meals and removing dishes after meals. Advise kitchen how many will be present for breakfast and dinner. Provide sighted assistance as needed. Regularly familiarize students with fire alarms, safety devices, exits and building evacuation procedures. In case of an emergency, call the appropriate service. Completes all accident and incident reports as appropriate. Assist students in planning and coordinating a weekly off-grounds community recreation night. Other duties as outlined in the position description. Education and Experience: High School diploma required. Some college preferred; aptitude for and experience in social relations. Ability to work effectively with disabled individuals, and establish a household atmosphere. Valid CA Driver License with a minimum of three (3) years good driving history and must be approved by the agency’s insurance carrier to drive agency vehicles.
