Position Caregiver Department ALF Nursing Reports To Shift Supervisor (LVN) FLSA Status Non-exempt Prepared By Human Resources Prepare Date January 2015 Revised Date August 2020 Job Summary Under the direction and supervision of the Shift Supervisor (LVN), the Caregiver performs tasks that involve specific services for residents, which are supportive and complimentary of nursing practice in St. Richard Pampuri Apartments, St. John Grande, and St. Benedict Menni residence. Mission and Values Demonstrates the competencies to fulfill the Mission and values of St. John of God Ministry, which are the foundation of all activities performed by every employee Mission Core Values We are here to extend the healing mission of Jesus through the Hospitality of St. John of God by continually improving the health and quality of life of the people we serve Hospitality Creates an environment where people can feel welcomed, comfortable, understood, esteemed and love Respect Recognizes the richness of God’s gifts and His presences in every person regardless of age, situation in life, culture or religion Quality Works toward creating centers of excellence and service fostering continuous improvement in the quality of service Responsibility Encourages cooperation as a way of promoting standards of competence, efficiency and accountability as we carry out our duties in the Mission Essential Functions Provides a suitable environment for the residents by giving attention to cleanliness, ventilation, lighting and furniture arrangements Assists residents to ensure their cleanliness, grooming, nourishment, rest, activity and elimination in a manner conducive to the resident’s comfort and safety Preserves the dignity and self-respect of all residents at all times Practices confidentiality about the resident’s nursing care activities Promotes restorative nursing care as directed and instructed for individual residents Keeps alert to the resident’s condition and reports to the Charge Nurse, changes in the resident’s attitude, appearance, behavior, and physical ability Performs certain nursing procedures which do not require professional evaluation as assigned and instructed by the Charge Nurse and/or MedTech Practices conservation of equipment and supplies, keeping them clean and ready for use, reports any equipment and supply needs to the Charge Nurse Practices first aid measures as applicable and as instructed by the Charge Nurse Promptly answers emergency pendants and/or pull cords Transports residents as needed throughout the facility Assists residents as needed throughout the facility Recognizes and respects the resident’s individual emotional, social, and cultural needs, including their religious beliefs Keeps written notes of specific assignments and records pertinent information about the residents Responsible to perform laundry duties, including hanging and putting away resident’s clothes Additional Responsibilities & Duties Attends required in-services and safety meetings Performs other duties as assigned Follows organizational and departmental procedures Information Management Treats all information and data within the scope of the position with confidentiality and security Risk Management Cooperates fully in all risk management activities and investigations Physical Demands & Working Conditions Lift up to 50 lbs.: Occasionally to carry medical charts, supplies and resident’s personal items, e.g. clothing and food items; Occasionally when lifting soiled bed linens; occasionally to frequently when assisting an ambulatory resident in bathing or dressing Reach above shoulder height: Rarely, occurs when reaching for medical records or supplies located on shelves Reach at shoulder height: Frequently may occur while assisting resident in eating, when changing bed linens and when taking vital signs Reach below shoulder height: Frequently occurs while assisting residents with peri-care and bathing Push/Pull: Occasionally may be required to push a laundry cart which rolls easily across tile or carpeted floor Grasping: Frequently grasping while transferring resident Handling: Constantly handling residents’ personal items, blood pressure gauge, thermometer and eating utensils Fingering: Occasionally occurs while documenting residents’ medical chart Twisting: Occasionally may occur while transferring resident Bending: Occasionally occurs while taking vital signs, assisting resident in bathing, providing pericare, etc. Squatting: Occasionally may occur while bathing resident, also required when putting on shoes and socks of residents, and also when making eye-to-eye contact while talking if resident is in a wheelchair Kneeling: Occasionally may occur while bathing resident Crouching: Required when putting on shoes and socks of resident, and also when making eye-toeye contact while talking to resident in a wheelchair During an eight-hour day employee is required to sit for one hour, stand for four hours and walk for three hours Must follow all safety measures and procedures Must follow the dress code policy Required Qualifications Current CPR and First Aid Certificates Graduation from eight grade is acceptable, graduate from high school or equivalent is preferred At least one year experience in a related field Demonstrates good character and continuing reputation of personal integrity Strong interpersonal skills Additional Requirements Must keep all required certificates and/or licenses current Demonstrates good character and continuing reputation of personal integrity Ability to speak English clearly and write legibly Able to adequately perform the physical requirements of the position Required Qualifications Current CPR and First Aid Certificates Graduation from eight grade is acceptable, graduate from high school or equivalent is preferred At least one year experience in a related field Demonstrates good character and continuing reputation of personal integrity Strong interpersonal skills Additional Requirements Must keep all required certificates and/or licenses current Demonstrates good character and continuing reputation of personal integrity Ability to speak English clearly and write legibly Able to adequately perform the physical requirements of the position
